Foundations at the GDCh

The GDCh acts as trustee for a whole range of dependent foundations. The purpose of these foundations is to award prizes, awards for young researchers and scholarships.

The Karl Ziegler Foundation awards the Karl Ziegler Award, endowed with 50,000 euros, one of the two highest-value foundation prizes awarded by the GDCh for outstanding scientific achievements in chemistry. The Karl Ziegler Award for Young Researchers also includes a scholarship for early-career scientists to finance a postdoctoral position.

The Klaus Grohe Prize is endowed with 75,000 euros, making it one of the most highly endowed awards in the field of medicinal chemistry and drug research. The prize was endowed by Klaus Grohe; together with his wife Eva Grohe, he established the Klaus Grohe Foundation at the GDCh in 2001.

The Drs Volker and Elke Münch Foundation provides financial support to young scientists when registering patents.

Other awards include the Paul Bunge Prize, awarded by the Hans R. Jenemann Foundation, as well as the awards of the Scimus et Sciemus-, Dr. Hermann Schnell-, Hellmut Bredereck-, Georg Manecke-, Wolfgang Johannes Hönle- and Meyer-Galow Foundation.

Among the most recently established foundations are the Christel and Herbert W. Roesky Foundation, which every two years awards a prize endowed with 10,000 euros in the field of molecular main-group chemistry, and the Reinhard Zellner Foundation, which awards a prize for an outstanding contribution to scientific and/or technical progress in the production and use of green hydrogen in industrial processes and in the energy sector, including the production of CO₂-reduced fuels.

Foundation advisory boards decide on the awarding of prizes and distinctions.
