Testimonials

“… I wanted to take this opportunity, as the funding period comes to an end, to thank you and the whole foundation once again for your support during my bachelor’s degree. It has opened up many opportunities for me, such as an internship at the University of Glasgow this summer, which would hardly have been possible without this support! From this semester, I will continue my studies in the master’s programme in Chemistry at Ulm University.”

Tamara H., Ulm, was one of the first scholarship holders

“The support I received made it possible for me to focus solely on my studies while continuing my voluntary work, expanding it further and building my network. In many ways, your support helped me improve my academic performance, whether by giving me more time to study, as I no longer needed to work alongside my studies, or by enabling me to enrich my knowledge with specialist literature, among other things. There is so much more I could say, but ultimately I would like to thank you very much for your support over the past period, and I will remain grateful to you in the future.”

Domenic G., Siegen

“This week marks the end of my funding through the GDCh Hofmann Scholarship. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support over the past year. There is no doubt that the Hofmann Scholarship helped me to focus fully on my examinations during the preparation period for my first state examination in food chemistry. I also have your support, among other things, to thank for making it possible for me to fulfil my wish to write my scientific dissertation externally at Leibniz University Hannover. Without the financial support, I would not have been able to cover the additional costs involved. Once again, many thanks!”

Oliver W., Nuremberg-Erlangen

“Your support enabled me to focus primarily on my studies and to purchase the literature I needed to prepare for my examinations. I was also not tied down by work during the lecture-free period, and was therefore able to undertake a four-week placement in analytical chemistry. This gave me the opportunity to get to know a working group that fascinated me. Thanks to the exceptionally friendly colleagues and excellent working atmosphere, I was able to find my feet here. In my dissertation, I ultimately investigated the synthesis and (bio)analytical applications of nanoparticles, and decided to specialise in the analytical field as part of my Master’s degree. In short, the August-Wilhelm-von-Hofmann scholarship helped me find my path and follow it.”

Sandy H., Regensburg

#August Wilhelm von Hofmann Foundation

"Only what speaks for itself
can also make itself heard."

(Quote A.W. v. Hofmann)

August Wilhelm von Hofmann (1818–1892) was the founding president of the first German chemical society and the namesake of the GDCh Foundation.

The Foundation’s capital comes from a GDCh member who died in 2010 and bequeathed a substantial part of their estate to the GDCh for a specific purpose. They stipulated that, after their death, their estate should be used to support chemistry students. The August-Wilhelm-von-Hofmann Foundation awards scholarships to students studying chemistry or related subjects on bachelor’s, diploma or state examination courses.

#How do I apply for a scholarship?

  • First read the information about the call for proposals and then apply via the Online application portal.
  • Add the required documents (proof of academic performance, CV, letter of motivation, Abitur certificate).
  • Provide the email address of the professor who will write a letter of recommendation for you. We recommend arranging this with the person concerned beforehand. Your application is only complete once the letter of recommendation has been submitted. You will receive an email as soon as your letter of recommendation has been uploaded.

The application deadline, including the letter of recommendation, is 1 February 2027.

  • The GDCh regional branch chairs and JCF regional representatives will assess the applications received by the respective regional branch in the Online portal by 16 February 2027 at the latest. They will then forward two applications to the GDCh Office.
  • You will be informed once the foundation board has made a selection.

#Framework conditions

The conditions in detail:

  • The August-Wilhelm-von-Hofmann Foundation supports students of chemistry and related disciplines (approx. 55% (100 out of 180 ECP) chemistry modules) and students training to teach chemistry in the fourth to sixth semesters of their Bachelor's, Diplom or state examination degree with a grant of €300 per month. The grant runs for 18 or 12 months, totalling €5,400 or €3,600. The grant cannot be extended.
  • Students can apply in the third or fourth semester of their Bachelor's, Diplom or state examination degree. The grant is paid from April until and including September of the following year.
  • You must send your application to the chair of the local section responsible for your region or to the regional JCF (JungesChemieForum). Complete the Online application form and attach your personal statement, CV and university transcript of academic results. A university lecturer must then upload the reference letter.
  • Only two applications from each local section can be forwarded to the Foundation Board. If more than two applications are submitted, the chair of the local section and the regional JCF (JungesChemieForum) spokesperson will make a preselection.
  • The Foundation Board receives the nominations and decides in March who will receive a grant. Successful applicants are notified immediately afterwards. Payments begin at the end of April.
  • Around 20 grants are awarded in total.
  • Ability, academic performance and the applicant's financial circumstances are selection criteria for the Foundation Board. Its decisions are final. The Foundation Board includes the current GDCh President, the GDCh Treasurer and the GDCh Executive Director. The GDCh Board appoints four additional members. The JCF (JungesChemieForum) has the right to nominate one of these four members.

Important! The grant is not taken into account when calculating BAföG benefits, but it cannot be combined with other merit-based financial support from organisations that promote gifted students.
