Who we are – what we do

A pillar of the water research network

The Society of Water Chemistry Division was founded in Kiel in 1926 and is a pillar of the water research network in Germany: students and professionals from a range of disciplines who have made water their profession are active here, enthusiastically contributing their expertise to address challenges in a wide variety of fields. The personal encounters and discussion of current professional developments facilitated by the Society of Water Chemistry act as a catalyst for this.

The effects of climate change are being felt worldwide and are particularly evident in connection with water – often in relation to too much or too little water, or deteriorating water quality. Consequently, protecting, treating, safeguarding the quality of, using and managing water are increasingly important tasks. The Division’s members contribute a wide range of perspectives to safeguarding water as an important habitat, an indispensable foodstuff and a fundamental human right – by developing scientific principles and putting them into practice.

The Society of Water Chemistry offers interested professionals:

  • A platform for collaborative work on current water-related issues (e.g. preparing expert statements and research strategies, initiating research networks, etc.)
  • The development of professional perspectives
  • The promotion of the exchange of ideas and experience through its own Conferences, workshops and publications

Our experts have completed a wide range of degree programmes and training courses:

Our members include scientists from the fields of (water) chemistry, (micro)biology, hygiene, hydro(geo)logy, process engineering, engineering and environmental science. They work, for example, at and in universities, universities of applied sciences, research centres, analytical institutes, public authorities, water and energy supply companies, the (chemical) industry and engineering consultancies. The diversity of disciplines and professionally shaped perspectives enables an integrated, multidisciplinary and therefore nuanced approach.

What topics do we cover?

  • Analysis of water, wastewater, sludge, suspended solids, sediment, soil and biota for organic and inorganic (pollutants), including the development of new modern methods
  • Water quality (e.g. groundwater, drinking water, surface water, rainwater, mineral water and thermal water)
  • Assessment of the status of water bodies and water protection
  • Treatment and use of water as drinking water, mineral water or process water in industry
  • Treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater
  • Measures to save water
  • Water reuse (water reuse)
  • Effects of climate change on the water resource
