Developing standardised analytical methods for water analysis was one of the founding aims of the Society of Water Chemistry, and has been pursued since 1928 by the committee established specifically for this purpose. Together with DIN, the German Institute for Standardization, the committee is responsible for the development and maintenance of the German Standard Methods for the Examination of Water, Wastewater and Sludge (DEV).
