Solid-State Chemistry & Materials Research

The GDCh Division solid-state chemistry and materials research has existed since 1963 – initially as “Semiconductor Chemistry”, from 1969 to 1999 as “Solid-State Chemistry”, before being expanded to its present scope. It currently has approximately 950 members from academia, industry and the public sector. Around one third of the members are students and early-career members.
The Division combines creative synthesis with structural elucidation and property-oriented materials research as the basis for modern solid-state technologies, which are directly linked to industrial materials research. It provides the ideal framework for scientific exchange between researchers from universities, research institutes and industrial companies, and is a forum for networking between early-career scientists and experienced figures in solid-state chemistry and materials science.
Today, solid-state chemistry and materials research are based on an enormous breadth of substances and on the investigation of a wide range of material properties. These include important intrinsic properties such as magnetism, electronic and ionic conductivity, thermoelectricity, superconductivity, as well as optical, mechanical and catalytic properties; they also include substances with specialised structures, nanoparticulate, micro- and mesoporous systems, composites, ceramics, inorganic–organic hybrid materials, and materials with low-dimensional structures. The close interplay between experiment and theory (e.g. many-body theory, real-space theory and molecular dynamics) enables modern methods to address relevant solid-state chemical and materials-oriented questions, identify sustainable solutions and advance pioneering developments.
The Division brings together scientific and technological interests in fundamental solid-state chemistry research – from development through to application. It builds bridges to neighbouring disciplines such as materials science, solid-state physics and sustainable chemistry, thereby contributing to the answering of questions of relevance to society.
