2023 Leipzig

SEC at the Science Forum in Leipzig

The GDCh Science Forum (WiFo) 2023 took place in Leipzig from 4–6 September 2023. The Senior Expert Chemists hosted an afternoon of lectures there on Tuesday, 5 September, whose theme referred to Leipzig:

Chemistry Meets Art

Through the lectures, we referred to Wilhelm Ostwald, who was also a painter. "Chemistry in the Visual Arts" was another title. One lecture dealt with the restoration of the burnt books from the library in Weimar, and finally there was a discussion of the Nebra Sky Disc:

  • Wilhelm Ostwald – His Work and Its Significance Today: Dr. Jürgen Koppe (MOL Katalysatortechnik)
  • Chemistry in the Visual Arts: Prof. Dr. Reiner Salzer, Dr. Rainer Behrends (TU Dresden), Prof. Dr. Lothar Beyer (University of Leipzig)
  • The Second Life of the Ash Books from the Duchess Anna Amalia Library: Laura Völkel, M.A. (University of Vienna)
  • Science in the Bronze Age: What Does the Nebra Sky Disc Tell Us?: Prof. Dr. Ernst Pernicka (University of Tübingen)

WiFo 23 took place at the Congress Hall at the Zoo in Leipzig.

Rethinking the History of Chemistry

We, the SEC, took part together with the GDCh Equal Opportunities Commission in the symposium "Rethinking History of Chemistry" initiated by the history of chemistry Division on 4 September 2023. The event demonstrated the inspiration that can be drawn from the history of chemistry. In a panel discussion, we then discussed the significance of the history of chemistry for our present and future. » Download the invitation and programme.
