Who we are – what we do

The GDCh Division of Macromolecular Chemistry was founded in 1948 and currently has more than 1,300 members – including more than a quarter who are students or early-career members. Through intensive internal and external exchange, the Division addresses current challenges in research, application and education in macromolecular chemistry and related disciplines, and makes an effective contribution to maintaining and promoting the competitiveness of Germany as a centre of science and industry.

Our aim is to promote science and research through

  • the exchange of information and experience beyond the boundaries of the specialist disciplines of polymer science,
  • discussion and cooperation with other GDCh Divisions as well as with associations and organisations in the field of polymer science,
  • dialogue on social developments, challenges and shared objectives of universities, institutes and industry,
  • ensuring excellent education and expanding a diverse higher education landscape, and
  • promoting and supporting students and early-career academics, as well as contributing to the vocational training of professionals.

We pursue this aim, among other things, by

  • organising an international scientific conference, the Division conference "MAKRO" (even-numbered years),
  • holding the University Early-Career Workshop with the selection of the Reimund-Stadler Award and Makro scholarships,
  • awarding travel grants,
  • contributing to the GDCh professional development programme (GDCh.academy).
