Chemistry and Energy
The GDCh Division Chemistry & Energy was founded in 2009 and currently has more than 500 members from universities, research institutions, industry and public administration – with numbers steadily rising in view of the challenges of the global energy transition. Students and early-career members account for more than half of the membership. This young network in every respect is a forum for everyone who is working on or would like to contribute to chemical solutions for the energy transition.
The energy transition is one of the greatest challenges of our time
Our modern industrial society, and therefore chemical production, is based on fossil fuels, whether as raw materials or energy sources. Global growth and increasing industrialisation are leading to steadily rising energy demand worldwide. At the same time, fossil fuel reserves are finite, associated with geopolitical challenges, and their use has unforeseeable impacts on the climate. The development of new, renewable and climate-neutral energy sources, as well as the resource-efficient and efficient use of these energy supplies, are therefore of central importance for a successful energy transformation. Chemistry, as a cross-cutting technology, has a key role to play in this.

Our contribution to the energy transition: bridging the gap between industry and academia
The aim of the Chemistry & Energy Division is to strengthen cooperation between academia and industry in order to advance the energy transition successfully. Consequently, events and initiatives focus on exchange and cooperation formats that shed light on different perspectives, particularly economic ones.
