From chemical structure to biological function
Research into the molecular foundations of living systems is the guiding principle of biochemistry. A diverse range of methods is developing with remarkable dynamism in order to elucidate and influence complex chemical structures, as well as their biological functions and interactions. Modern methods of structural analysis make it possible to elucidate the biological functions of macromolecules and their complexes. Detailed insights are also being gained into the mechanisms of enzymatic catalysis, material and electron transport, signal transduction and cell-to-cell communication. As a result of basic biochemical research, recombinant proteins with therapeutic potential have, for example, been made available. Genetically modified enzymes with new substrate specificities are also increasingly being used in white biotechnology.
The fascination arising from this forms the basis for a vibrant interdisciplinary network.
