Gerhard-Hesse Award

Gerhard-Hesse Award

Gerhard-Hesse-Preis

The Working Group Separation Science of the GDCh Division of Analytical Chemistry awards the Gerhard-Hesse Award, endowed with 3000 euros, in odd-numbered years as part of ANAKON – in recognition of the life’s work of Professor Gerhard Hesse, the founding Chair of the working group. The award honours scientists who have made outstanding contributions in the field of analytical separation techniques, achieved particular distinction in this scientific discipline and are under 50 years of age. All members of the Working Group Separation Science are entitled to submit nominations. The extended Board of the working group decides on the award.

Current call for proposals: Gerhard-Hesse Award 2027

Submission deadline: 15 December 2026

Objective
The Working Group Separation Science of the GDCh Division of Analytical Chemistry awards the Gerhard-Hesse Award in odd-numbered years to scientists who have achieved outstanding accomplishments in the field of analytical separation techniques, have rendered exceptional services to this scientific discipline and are no older than 50. The award is presented in memory of the founding Chair of the former Chromatography working group.

The award
The award includes a certificate and prize money of 3000 euros. The formal presentation will take place as part of ANAKON 2027 in Mainz (5–8 April 2027) – followed by a presentation by the award winner. The Working Group Separation Science will cover the costs of attending the conference. The extended Board of the working group decides on the award.

Nomination
All members of the working group are entitled to submit nominations. Applications are not possible. Scientists who have achieved outstanding accomplishments in the field of analytical separation techniques may be nominated; they should be no older than 50. All nominations must comprise an informal appreciation of the nominee’s achievements and the nominee’s CV (including contact details).

Submission
Please send your proposal electronically and combined into a single PDF file to Dr. Martin Vogel, Chair of the Working Group Separation Science.

Gerhard-Hesse Award 2025

The Gerhard-Hesse Award 2025 was presented on 11 March 2025 on the occasion of ANAKON in Leipzig to Dr Thorsten Teutenberg "for his work in the field of analytical separation techniques – and particularly in liquid chromatography – which is characterised by its great breadth. This includes work in the field of high-temperature LC, on column switching for sample preparation, on two-dimensional separations, as well as work examining fundamental aspects of liquid chromatography, work on miniaturisation and on coupling techniques, to name just a few examples. Future-oriented laboratory concepts such as ‘Future Lab.NRW’, which addresses the current topics of automation and digitalisation, are conceptually the work of Dr Teutenberg. The Teutenberg laboratory is a source of highly innovative and applied liquid chromatographic research at the cutting edge. In all his scientific work, he has consistently been committed not only to publishing the results in peer-reviewed journals, but also to making them accessible to practitioners. The Analytik-Tage at IUTA, which he has played a major role in shaping and which will be held for the ninth time this year, are a good example of this."

The Gerhard-Hesse Award 2021 was presented to PD Dr. Katja Dettmer-Wilde on 22 June 2022 on the occasion of the analytica conference in Munich "in recognition of her scientific achievements in the field of developing and applying chromatographic methods for metabolomics. Combining chromatographic techniques with mass spectrometry is the focus of her methodological developments, which cover a broad spectrum. These include, in particular, GC-MS, GCxGC-MS and LC-MS/MS. Her extensive contributions to the analysis of amino acids in various biological samples have attracted considerable attention. The scientific work of PD Dr. Katja Dettmer is characterised by a great breadth of methods and innovation, encompassing sample preparation as well as the subsequent coupling of chromatography and detection. In addition, as a scientist and academic teacher, it is of great importance to her to pass on her passion for chromatography – and especially for gas chromatography – to others with great enthusiasm and expertise, both verbally and in writing."
