The Big Bang and the time afterwards brought matter into our universe. The starting materials were elementary particles; ultimately, solar systems—namely stars (suns) and planets—also emerged. The processes used in this included fusion, transmutation and nuclear fission—all of which generate energy as well as chemical elements. Natural radioactive isotopes have existed since the formation of the elements. In addition, humans produce further radioactive isotopes artificially. Radioactive radiation must be measured and monitored so that it can be used sensibly in medicine and technology without causing harm.
