From Plastic Waste to Toothbrushes – Opportunities and Limitations of Plastic Recycling

Online lecture by Dieter Kunz on 15 July 2025 at 3 pm

Moderator:NN

For around 35 years, Germany has been recycling paper, metal and plastic very diligently. There is an established recycling industry. Nevertheless, more and more new processes are now emerging. Why? Are there problems?

A scientific and technical examination provides some clues. The economy and ecology can use these as a guide when deciding what should and should not be done.

Pyrolysis of end-of-life tyres to recover carbon black

Online lecture by Dieter Kunz on 18/07/2023 at 3 p.m.

Moderation: Wolfgang Gerhartz

Recycling carbon black from end-of-life tyres is not new. This technology has been under development for over 40 years. Carbon black is a relatively valuable industrial raw material, whose production through targeted combustion is considerably more energy-intensive than recovery from end-of-life tyres. Recycling is highly valued. Nevertheless, there is still “much room for improvement” in the recovery rate. What is the reason for this?

Plastic Waste – Knowledge and Speculation

Online lecture by Dieter Kunz on 27/04/2021 from 14:00 to 15:00

Moderation: Wolfgang Gerhartz

We are annoyed by every image of plastic waste in the sea. What has happened is irresponsible. Reports about marine litter are becoming more frequent. This affects us emotionally. But what facts do we know? How great is the potential danger?
What can be done? Which gaps in our knowledge still exist? The short lecture “Plastic waste – knowledge and speculation” addresses these questions.
