For around 35 years, Germany has been recycling paper, metal and plastic very diligently. There is an established recycling industry. Nevertheless, more and more new processes are now emerging. Why? Are there problems?
A scientific and technical examination provides some clues. The economy and ecology can use these as a guide when deciding what should and should not be done.

Recycling carbon black from end-of-life tyres is not new. This technology has been under development for over 40 years. Carbon black is a relatively valuable industrial raw material, whose production through targeted combustion is considerably more energy-intensive than recovery from end-of-life tyres. Recycling is highly valued. Nevertheless, there is still “much room for improvement” in the recovery rate. What is the reason for this?
