Medicinal Chemistry

Who we are – what we do

The GDCh Division of Medicinal Chemistry has existed since 1971. Its approximately 1,000 members work at university institutes, research institutions and in the pharmaceutical industry. The Division builds a bridge between the fields of chemistry, biology, medicine, pharmacy, computer science and engineering. It addresses issues relating to modern drug development across disciplines, particularly drug discovery, lead compound optimisation incorporating modern technologies such as combinatorial synthesis, high-throughput screening systems based on molecular biology, drug design, molecular modelling, quantitative structure–activity analyses, pharmacokinetics and metabolism.

The Division promotes interdisciplinary exchange and supports medicinal chemistry, which is not established as a taught subject in Germany, through

  • organising Conferences, workshops and vocational training courses, including jointly with the German Pharmaceutical Society (DPhG) and the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology (EFMC),
  • cooperation between the GDCh and DPhG Divisions and between universities and the pharmaceutical industry.

It supports early-career academics and ensures their vocational training in their profession through

  • vocational training events,
  • awarding scholarships for active participation in Division events and symposia,
  • awarding PhD Awards,
  • awarding the Innovation Award for Medicinal/Pharmaceutical Chemistry – jointly with the DPhG Division of Pharmaceutical/Medicinal Chemistry.
