The 2023 doctoral seminar on the chemistry of construction materials took place on the grounds of the European Youth Education and Meeting Centre in Weimar. Nine doctoral researchers took the opportunity to exchange ideas on scientific matters and present their doctoral research topics. Alongside the academic exchange, the programme included a barbecue evening, an afternoon walk to famous Bauhaus sites, a visit to the “Schmale Handtuch” (a Weimar institution where beer has been served to thirsty customers – including many students – for more than 100 years) and a guided tour of the laboratories of the Chair of the Chemistry of Construction Materials and Polymer Materials, equipped with state-of-the-art testing and analytical technology.

Programme
Following the successful events held in Weimar from 2007 to 2011, the Division of the Chemistry of Construction Materials was once again able to offer a PhD seminar for doctoral researchers at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences – Technology and Business on 11–13 May this year. In addition to visiting the Sika headquarters in Stuttgart and touring the Stuttgart 21 construction site, the 2.5-day meeting focused on the seminar, which featured specialist presentations on the participants’ current research topics. Following the presentations, there was time for an intensive exchange among the participants and with their supervising professors. The concluding workshop addressed career planning and applications, as well as the first steps after completing a doctorate. It also explored the current tension between academic work and taking on teaching duties during doctoral studies, which was openly discussed with Dr. Saskia Oehmichen, representing the “NextStep” platform of Deutsche Bauchemie.
