chemistry of construction materials
Tasks and questions relating to the chemistry of construction materials arise at all times in the construction industry, the building materials industry, the building trade, monument conservation and, where applicable, for building users. During periods of strong construction activity—associated with increased new construction—these are sometimes different tasks and questions from those arising during quieter periods of construction activity, when building maintenance becomes more important. As the volume of new construction has fallen sharply in the recent past, we are once again facing a period of extensive building maintenance measures. Their cost may exceed that of new construction measures. In the context of maintenance measures, the chemistry of construction materials is even more important than in the context of new construction measures, for example when selecting materials suitable for construction.
The GDCh Division of the Chemistry of Construction Materials, which has existed since 1997 and has around 300 members, aims to pool knowledge relating to the chemistry of construction materials, contribute to the exchange of information and provide new impetus. It seeks to improve the knowledge of the chemistry of construction materials among all those involved in construction, while also influencing legal and regulatory requirements on a sound technical basis.
