chemistry of construction materials

Who we are – what we do

Chemistry of construction materials tasks and questions arise at all times in the construction industry, the building materials industry, the building trade, heritage conservation and, where applicable, for building users. During periods of lively construction activity – associated with increased new construction – some of these tasks and questions are different from those in quieter phases of the construction cycle, when building maintenance takes on greater importance. As the volume of new construction has fallen sharply in the recent past, we are once again facing a period of extensive building maintenance measures. Their costs may exceed those of new construction measures. As part of maintenance measures, chemistry of construction materials is even more important than in new construction measures, for example when selecting suitable building materials.

The GDCh Division of the Chemistry of Construction Materials, which has existed since 1997 and has around 300 members, has set itself the goal of pooling knowledge of chemistry of construction materials, contributing to the exchange of information and providing new impetus. It aims to improve the knowledge of chemistry of construction materials among all construction professionals, while also seeking to influence legal and regulatory requirements on a sound professional basis.

The diverse tasks of chemistry of construction materials can only be mastered if appropriately trained personnel in chemistry of construction materials are also available. This applies to chemists, more of whom are needed with qualified training in chemistry of construction materials; to representatives of architecture, civil engineering and heritage conservation; and also to the many other construction professionals, too few of whom have sufficient knowledge of chemistry of construction materials issues. This quite often leads to the incorrect use or combination of building materials, resulting in consequential damage and costs.
