CheMento - The Programme

CheMento, the GDCh’s mentoring programme, was first launched as a pilot project in January 2014 and has since been carried out every two years with 30 tandems.

CheMento is designed as one-to-one mentoring. This means that one mentor supports one mentee.

CheMento aims to

  • provide sustainable support for up-and-coming professionals in chemistry
  • increase Career opportunities in science, industry and society
  • prepare up-and-coming professionals for the demands of working life in a practical way
  • facilitate transitions and entry into the profession
  • make successful Career paths in chemistry visible
  • promote the reconciliation of family and Career and
  • build sustainable Career networks

Supporting programme and schedule

The mentoring partnership is designed to last 12 months and is accompanied by a supporting programme. Within this framework, mentees and mentors are prepared for their respective roles and supported throughout the mentoring process. There will also be opportunities to network and engage in in-depth exchange with the other participants.

The supporting programme includes

  • a kick-off event at the beginning of the mentoring year in January/February (location varies).
  • a mid-term review in the summer to draw initial conclusions and plan the second half of the year (held at the GDCh Office in Frankfurt am Main).
  • a closing event at which the year spent together is reviewed in a celebratory setting (location varies).

General prerequisite for successful mentoring

Fundamental to a successful mentoring relationship is an equal partnership characterised by mutual respect and a positive attitude – despite differences in age and experience.

Further requirements are:

  • The mentee and mentor participate in the programme voluntarily
  • There is no direct dependency relationship between the mentee and the mentor
  • The mentoring relationship lasts for a defined period (12 months here), but can be continued beyond this by individual agreement
  • A binding and reliable approach to appointments and agreements is essential
  • The discussions take place in a protected setting and are strictly confidential
  • At the beginning of the cooperation, the mentee and mentor should clarify their specific expectations, intended goals, means of contact, forms of communication, feedback, etc. with each other
  • At least 3–5 personal meetings should take place per year; these can be supplemented by emails, (Skype) calls, etc.

Matching – or who is matched with whom?

The selection and composition of the tandems is carried out by an advisory board appointed by the GDCh, comprising representatives from various GDCh structures. The tandems are matched on the basis of the registration profiles.

Important criteria for this are

  • academic and professional orientation
  • personal development, and
  • geographical distance

The participants’ personal interests and experiences also play an important role. After all, when “the chemistry is right”, the benefits of the mentoring relationship are particularly significant.

Once the matching phase has been completed, all tandem partners receive each other’s contact details. The mentees make initial contact with their mentors. The official pairing takes place as part of the launch event. After getting to know each other, the mentee and mentor decide whether they would like to enter into a collaboration and inform the GDCh accordingly.
