Hildegard Hamm-Brücher Prize

The Diversity-Sensitive STEM Career Guidance for Schoolgirls (DiSenSu) team has been awarded the Hildegard Hamm-Brücher Prize for Equal Opportunities in Chemistry – in recognition of its pioneering career guidance in chemistry for girls from migrant backgrounds. The project works to counter educational disadvantage, promote equal opportunities and was judged by the selection committee to be “extremely well-founded, innovative and sustainable”.
DiSenSu is a joint project run by TU Darmstadt and Ludwigsburg University of Education. At its heart is a gender- and diversity-sensitive career guidance tool for chemistry, which encourages young women – particularly those with a migration background – to consider chemistry-related careers and shows them suitable prospects. The project centred on several hundred intensive one-to-one coaching sessions featuring tests and exercises on strengths, interests and chemistry-specific skills.
In addition, comics featuring female role models, a career guidance card game, as well as academic publications and conference contributions were produced. All materials, the evaluated tool and documentation will remain available after the end of the project, enabling schools and educational providers to use the DiSenSu format independently – regardless of the type of school attended by participants.
