GDCh statement and discussions on PFAS

Position statement and discussions on PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances)

Below you will find the statement prepared by the GDCh Think Tank "PFAS" on the EU PFAS restriction proposal. The statement was submitted to the European Chemicals Agency before the end of the public consultation period.

GDCh Comments on the PFAS Restriction Proposal of ECHA (September 2023)

Discussions within the GDCh

The statement was prepared by the people named in the document. In addition to support, there was also criticism from among our members. Members, particularly from the fields of environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology and regulatory affairs, criticised the statement’s risk assessment, which, in their view, was essentially conducted from the perspective of industry and ignored the existing knowledge of the environmental and health risks associated with these compounds.

To present the discussion process within the GDCh transparently, on these pages we document the letters to the editor published on this topic in Nachrichten aus der Chemie, issue 12/2023, as well as the statement by the board of the Division of environmental chemistry & ecotoxicology.

Additions to the GDCh statement on ECHA’s proposal to restrict PFAS (December 2023)

We would also like to draw attention to further contributions on this topic in Nachrichten aus der Chemie . You can find these contributions on the pages of the Top Topics under the keyword PFAS (Per- and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances).

The GDCh welcomes scientific discussion among its members. We will optimise the consultation processes so that all relevant voices within the GDCh are heard. We expressly accept that scientific consensus cannot be reached in some cases.
