Supramolecular chemistry

Who we are – what we do

The Supramolecular Chemistry Working Group was founded on 18 March 2025 as part of the Chemiedozententagung in Braunschweig and is the newest GDCh structure within the German Chemical Society (GDCh). Supramolecular chemistry is an interdisciplinary field of research that ranges from organic, inorganic and physical chemistry to the life sciences and materials science, and has a long tradition in Germany. The field has gained considerably in importance over the past two decades – as demonstrated by the establishment of numerous research networks and the great success of the SupraChem Conferences, which have grown steadily since their launch in 2011; SupraChem 2024 already attracted 330 participants.

GDCh members from all disciplines and at all career stages are warmly invited to join the Working Group. Membership is free for students.

Our aim is to promote science and research through

  • the exchange of information and experience across disciplines
  • collaboration with other GDCh Divisions and our European sister organisations
  • support for the next generation of supramolecular chemists
  • promoting the application of supramolecular research in industry
  • recognising outstanding achievements in teaching and research in supramolecular chemistry

We pursue this aim, among other things, by

  • organising the SupraChem Conferences (in 2026 at TU Dortmund University)
  • supporting national and international networking activities
  • awarding prizes (to be determined)
  • contributing to the GDCh continuing professional development programme (GDCh.academy)
