After almost two years, we were able to see each other live and in person in Bayreuth for the first time. In glorious sunshine, we met at the Arvena Congress Hotel on 3 May. The Conference focused on the topic “First career step after entering the profession”. On the first day, Sabrina Turba shared insights into her unconventional career path. The subsequent discussion made it clear that career planning is an important topic for many people starting their careers and that exchanging ideas offers great value. Eva Wille then gave a presentation on the development of equal opportunities in chemistry, based on the new brochure published in collaboration with various Divisions. This discussion continued over dinner with the Senior Experts in Chemistry (SEC), where we were able to exchange ideas with people who had already completed their working lives.
On the following day, we started with a presentation by Klaus-Peter Jäckel after a hearty breakfast. He compared how the requirements placed on people starting their careers have changed over time. Armed with this information, we began the World Café, where we rotated in groups between different themed tables and exchanged ideas with members of the SEC and the GDCh.
Our General Assembly then took place, at which the course was set for the future of GECCos. Many thanks to Melina Dilanas and Christian Henrichs for organising everything, and to the SEC for giving us the opportunity to join their Conference and benefit from the support of experienced people.
The participants’ feedback was predominantly positive, and we are looking forward to our next Conference!
