Scholarships and student funding
As a service for students and early-career researchers in chemistry, GDCh provides an overview of scholarships, funding programmes and study funding opportunities here.
In addition to information on the GDCh scholarship for bachelor's students of chemistry, you will find further information and links here to national, private and company-related funding opportunities that provide financial support for study, research and academic qualifications.
Under “Stipendienplus”, the BMBF-funded Working Group of organisations supporting gifted students in the Federal Republic of Germany has brought together on one page all foundations that could potentially provide funding.
The Association of German Foundations also offers a search function for finding a suitable funding provider.
The advancement scholarship is a federal study grant aimed at professionals with vocational training and at least two years’ professional experience. Applications are possible before starting a degree and up to the end of the second semester.
The classic: according to its own information, the German National Academic Foundation is the oldest and largest organisation supporting gifted students in Germany. In accordance with its statutes, it supports “the higher education of young people whose outstanding academic or artistic talent and whose personality give reason to expect exceptional achievements in the service of the general public”. It supports students in Germany and abroad.
The Deutschlandstipendium supports committed students at state universities in Germany. Good grades, civic engagement and exceptional personal achievements are taken into account when awarding the Deutschlandstipendium. It is funded by the federal government, universities and private sponsors.
Here, users can search among more than 1,200 funding opportunities (according to the operator) for scholarships matching their own criteria. Disadvantage: you cannot simply search; you must first register with a username and password and accept extensive terms of use.
This information platform emerged from a student initiative by students of education sciences in Jena. It brings together funding options for students, apprentices and other young people in education and training. Readers can find information on Bafög, scholarships, student loans, mini-jobs and other funding options.
The brochure "Gefördertes Lernen - Das große Stipendium-Dossier", which can be downloaded from the fernstudium-direkt website, also provides tips on everything related to scholarships.
This free eBook provides a good overview of the eligibility requirements, funding category, amount and frequency, as well as the effort involved in applying for each scholarship. Every year, new scholarships throughout Germany are compared over 130 pages using the criteria mentioned above. The search function in the PDF document makes it easy to find chemistry-specific scholarships.
It is not so well known that some companies also maintain foundations. Bayer AG, for example, awards a whole range of scholarships.
