Heilbronner-Hückel Lecture
Markus Reiher is a chemist and Professor of Chemistry at ETH Zurich. His work focuses on theoretical chemistry and calculating electronic structures using quantum mechanics. His research has applications in various fields, including catalysis, materials science and computational chemistry. In addition, he works on developing computer algorithms to predict reaction mechanisms and modelling transition states in chemical reactions.
The Heilbronner–Hückel Lecture was agreed between the Swiss Chemical Society and the German Chemical Society and established in 2009. Professor Jürgen Troe from Göttingen was the first to receive the award in 2010 and was invited to Switzerland.
Professor Erich Hückel was a theoretical chemist in Marburg and is considered a pioneer in the field of quantum chemistry. His most important scientific achievement was probably the formulation of the Hückel approximation and the resulting Hückel rule, which is now known to every chemist and is one of the fundamentals of chemistry. It can be used to predict whether a chemical compound is aromatic.
The German-Swiss theoretical chemist Edgar Heilbronner studied the Hückel approximation developed by Hückel intensively and published the concept of aromatic compounds with Möbius-strip topology in 1964. This type of aromatic compound was first synthesised in 2003.
Prof. Dr. Peter R. Schreiner is a chemist and holder of the Liebig Chair at Justus Liebig University Gießen. His research encompasses various fields: organocatalysis, nanodiamonds (diamondoids), matrix isolation of reactive intermediates and computational chemistry. He is also involved in developing computer algorithms to predict reaction mechanisms and modelling transition states in chemical reactions.
