two Postdoctoral researchers

The Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) investigates new active substances against infectious diseases. It was founded in August 2009 as a branch of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig together with Saarland University. A new research building was opened on the campus of Saarland University in 2015. Currently, more than 200 employees with international background work at the institute. The institute cooperates with international and national research institutions and companies.

Your areas of responsibility:

In the department Drug Design and Optimisation, we develop novel active agents against viral (e.g. KSHV and SARS-CoV-2) and bacterial (e.g., Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Mycobacterium tuberculosis) pathogens. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team of scientists aiming at the synthesis and biological evaluation of small organic molecules as inhibitors of defined bacterial enzymes, thus directly contributing to the generation of new drugs. Your tasks include working on current topics in drug discovery as well as preparing of presentations as a basis for discussion in project meetings.

Your profiles:

Both candidates have a PhD degree in chemistry and are highly motivated and interested in questions related to pharmaceutical research. The ability to work in an international team, solid communication skills in English and experience in writing scientific manuscripts are required for this position. Furthermore, sound knowledge in the design and synthesis of small organic molecules is strongly required. We also require experience with common analytical methods (NMR spectroscopy, LC-MS). An interest in biological testing of compounds and interpretation of results is advantageous. Initial experience in supervising undergraduate and graduate students would be an added plus. The confident handling of standard computer software such as MS Office (required) or Xcalibur (advantageous) is a matter of course for you.
