DFG-funded Ph.D. position in Origin of Life research at Heidelberg University. Prof. Dr. Andres Jäschke's team investigates one of the greatest mysteries in modern science, namely the origin of the genetic code. The lab has developed methods for interrogating large combinatorial RNA libraries by combining Illumina sequencing with novel aminoacylation assays. The candidate will apply and further develop this methodology to test different hypotheses regarding the origin of the genetic code. Thus, the project will combine chemistry, biochemical experiments, and computational analysis. We are seeking enthusiastic, motivated candidates interested in the origin of life. A Master's degree in biochemistry, biotechnology, or chemistry, strong academic performance, initiative, creativity, teamwork, and solid English language skills are prerequisites. PhD position (m/f/d) – 417-03/2024 in the area of Depolymerisation of bio-based polymers. The research group of Prof. Torsten Beweries at Leibniz Institute for Catalysis (LIKAT Rostock) has an opening for a position. Your task: Your work will focus on the development of mechanochemical tools for the depolymerisation and upcycling of bio-based polymers. The candidate is being supervised by Torsten Beweries (LIKAT Rostock) and Matthias Bauer (Paderborn University) as part of an interdisciplinary joint project. Your competence: Excellent knowledge of German or English language is required. Experience in the field of organic chemistry and good knowledge of standard characterisation techniques (NMR, IR, GC, MS) is mandatory. Knowledge of organometallic chemistry would be desirable. The Institute of Optics and Atomic Physics at TU Berlin (Prof. Otto Dopfer) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position (m/f/d, 3 years,  E13 TV-L 75%, DFG Project). The project involves the characterization of the structural and electronic properties of fundamental hydrocarbon molecules (diamondoids and their derivatives and aggregates) in the gas phase using state-of-the-art laser spectroscopy (IR, Vis, UV), mass spectrometry and quantum chemistry. The studied systems are highly relevant for astrochemistry, materials science, organic chemistry, pharmacy, and theoretical chemistry. The Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC) together with the Cluster of Excellence" Balance of the Microverse" at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena is offering a postdoctoral researcher position in Microbial Communication (m/f/d). We offer a full-time position (40 hours per week) that is initially limited until 31.12.2025. Hyphae are formed in soil by fungi as well as streptomycete bacteria. We want to investigate their impact on microbial communities with studies including FISH, RNAseq, proteome, metabolome and GMO strains combining the model basidiomycete Schizophyllum commune with a model streptomycete, Streptomyces mirabilis. The Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC) together with the Cluster of Excellence" Balance of  the Microverse" at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena is offering a postdoctoral researcher position in Mining of the Metabolome of the Oceans (m/f/d). The group of Bioorganic Analytics uses modern techniques in mass spectrometry and metabolomics to unravel chemical signals that mediate interactions between living beings. One focus of the group is on the role and nature of chemical mediators in the marine plankton. Für das in Kürze beginnende EFRE-NRW Projekt BioDeCoat suchen wir für 3 Jahr in Vollzeit (100 %) eine/n hochmotivierte/n PostDoc (m/w/d) welche/r in diesem interdisziplinären Recyclingprojekt von beschichteten Textilien und Spritzguss-Bauteilen die Forschungsarbeiten leitet. Beim Recycling wird auf chemische und mechanische Ansätze zurückgegriffen, um Beschichtungen/Lackierung von Textilien oder Bauteilen zu entfernen. In dem Projekt liegt der Fokus auf dem chemischen Recycling. Dabei ist die Prüfung der biologischen Abbaubarkeit der separierten Beschichtungen entscheidend. The Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC) together with the Cluster of Excellence" Balance of the Microverse" at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena is offering a postdoctoral researcher position in Modelling Stochastic Switching in Microbial Populations (m/f/d). We offer a full-time position (40 h/ week) that is initially limited until 31.12.2025. The successful candidate will be based in the Theoretical Microbial Ecology group led by Prof. Rosalind Allen at the University of Jena, Germany, and will collaborate closely with the Shade lab at CNRS, Lyon, France. We are looking for an individual with excellent theoretical and numerical skills and strong motivation to collaborate with microbial ecologists and engage with microbial ecology data. Environmental microbiomes provide key functions that feedback on climate and support soil and plant health. It is now becoming widely recognised that many microbes within these microbiomes can switch into and out of dormant metabolic states, and that the dormant subpopulation can strongly influence the microbiome’s ability to recover from environmental disturbances. The postdoctoral project will develop stochastic mathematical models for microbial communities that account for switching into and out of dormant states (Allen group), in order to explain empirical microbiome activity data (Shade group). The project will be hosted in the Allen group in Jena, and will involve regular visits to the Shade group in France to interact with the MicroRescue project team. The Department of Environmental Microbiology at the University of Stuttgart is looking for a PhD student (m/f/d) who will work on “Arsenic mobilization by anaerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria in groundwater systems in Hanoi/Vietnam” (TV-L E 13, 75%, 3 years). This PhD project will specifically investigate cultures of anaerobic Fe(III)-reducing methane-oxidizing microorganisms and field samples from Vietnam. We will carry out a field sampling (drilling) campaign followed by molecular biological and bioinformatic analyses to characterize the microbial community composition, (meta)genomic potential and gene expression patterns in field samples and in established cultures using techniques such as 16S rRNA (gene) amplicon sequencing, metagenomics, metatranscritpomics, and statistical analysis. 3 DC positions available within the Marie-Curie Doctoral Networks ACINETWORK: “A Training Network for the Design of Synthetic Carbohydrate-Based Vaccines in the Fight against Multi-Drug Resistant Nosocomial Pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii.” ACINETWORK is a multidisciplinary network (7 academic groups and  1 industrial partner as Beneficiaries along with 8 Associated Partners) that aims to forge 10 young professionals within an integrated research training programme in academia and industrial environments on the design and development of novel glycoconjugate vaccine candidates as treatment against severe and life-threatening infections caused by the multidrug-resistant bacterium Acinetobacter baumannii, a major cause of nosocomial diseases. The combination of the beneficiaries’ expertise in carbohydrate synthesis, conjugation techniques, nanotechnology, molecular glycobiology, cell biology, immunology and vaccinology, along with a wide experience in business and technological transfer, will create a multidisciplinary environment in which the Doctoral Candidates can nourish their skills and the most innovative ideas in the growing fields of glycoscience and vaccinology and simultaneously acquire transferable know-how that will enable them to become the new leaders of academic or industrial research. Please send the text of your job advertisement to karriere@gdch.de and insert it right into the Mail or attach it as an .rtf-file. Please do not send PDF files! In order to avoid further inquiries from our sides please do also indicate whether the publication should be online only or additionally in the “Nachrichten”, our monthly member’s magazine.

The ad should have no more than 1.100 characters including blanks, or 1.500 characters if several positions are announced in one ad. We reserve the right to shorten longer texts without notifying the advertiser. Please do not send us a designed advertisement! However, you can of course link to the complete announcement on your website.
Deadline for the submission is Friday noon (12pm) or the last working day in the week (in case of public holidays).

To provide job seekers a quick overview, the first line of the advertisement should name the vacant position (e.g., doctoral or postdoctoral position, professorship, etc.) and the institute or university with the vacancy (e.g. "Doctoral position/professorship available at the Institute for xxx of yyy University" – please see sample texts). Please also mention the application deadline and give the address for applications at the end of the ad. Shorter adverts will thereby rank higher on the list than longer and more complex ones.

Should you additionally want to publish your announcement in “Nachrichten aus der Chemie”, you have two options:
1. The individual job advert with graphics, logos etc: Choosing this option you can decide on the layout and text length yourself. For examples for individual ads take a look at our online job market “Industry and public service”. Prices vary according to the ad’s size. more

2. A small ad in form of a continuous text without graphics, logos. etc: You can choose to publish the same announcement as from the list “Universities and Research Institutes” additionally as a small ad in the “Nachrichten”. For a small ad in print we charge EUR 150,- (+ tax). Please mention in your mail if you want an additional publication in the “Nachrichten”.
