Nuclear Chemistry Division

Goals and tasks

The Nuclear Chemistry Division of the GDCh was founded in 1956. The goal of the division is to promote nuclear chemistry, radiochemistry, and radiation chemistry and to support students, technicians, and scientists working in these fields. The main tasks are information about new results, developments, and applications.
The dissemination of information and experiences is achieved by:

  • Conferences, workshops, and lecture events
  • Working groups to deal with scientific and technical aspects of particular applications
  • Participation in the scientific programme of the GDCh
  • Publications in the fields of nuclear, radio-, and radiation chemistry
  • Courses to mediate safe handling of radioactive materials
  • Relations to national and international committees, associations and organisations working in the same or related fields of science and technology.

A particular aspect is to promote and guarantee adequate capacities for research, teaching and education in nuclear, radio-, and radiation chemistry.

Main fields of work

The Nuclear Chemistry Division represents scientists and technicians working with open and sealed radioactive materials and ionizing radiation. The main fields of work can be summarized by:

  1. Fundamental research in nuclear chemistry
  2. Actinide chemistry
  3. Nuclear and radio-analytics
  4. Nuclear chemistry in the life sciences
  5. Earth sciences and cosmochemistry
  6. Technological applications of radioactive tracers
  7. Nuclear energy technology
  8. Nuclear waste disposal
  9. Tritium chemistry for fusion technology
  10. Radiation protection and radioecology.

Public relations work

The Nuclear Chemistry Division supports a rational and informed assessment of the chances and opportunities of the application of nuclear energy and radioactive materials in technology, research and medicine for the benefit of humans and the environment. The division offers itself to the general public as a competent partner for discussions and information.

Interdisciplinary collaboration with other fields of radiation research is supported by the Nuclear Chemistry Division by its membership in the German Gemeinschaftsausschuß Strahlenforschung (GAST).
