The Medicinal Chemistry Division of the German Chemical Society (GDCh) has been existing since 1971. Currently, it has about 700 members from universities and pharmaceutical industry. Its members are mainly chemists and pharmacists, but also computer scientists and process engineers and others.

The Medicinal Chemistry Division aims at linking chemistry with biology, medicine and pharmacy. Comprising different fields of research, it comprehensively deals with questions of modern drug development, especially with lead finding and lead optimization taking into consideration / using modern technologies like Combinatorial Synthesis, High Throughput Screening Systems based on molecular biology, Drug Design, Molecular Modelling, Quantitative Structure Activity Relationships (QSAR), Pharmacokinetics and Metabolism.

Medicinal Chemistry is a modern, multi-disciplinary field of research. It makes use of the latest scientific findings in biology and chemistry in order to selectively produce lead substances and thus highly contributes to the development of innovative drugs.

Goals

The division cultivates the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and supports Medicinal Chemistry, which in contrast many other countries is not established as a teaching discipline in Germany, by

  • organizing conferences and training courses, partly in cooperation with the Biochemical Division of the German Chemical Society (GDCh), the German Pharmaceutical Society (DPhG), and the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry (EFMC)
  • supporting the cooperation between the different divisions of the German Chemical Society and the German Pharmaceutical Society as well as the cooperation between universities and the pharmaceutical industry.

The Medicinal Chemistry Division supports young academics and helps them in their professional career by offering:

  • Training courses
  • Scholarships for conferences and symposiums of the division
  • A Young Scientist Award for Special Innovation in Medicinal Chemistry together with the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Division of the German Pharmaceutical Society (DPhG).

The Medicinal Chemistry Division is committed to a profound academic education of German chemistry and pharmacy students in order to maintain Germany as a pharmaceutical research site.

In cooperation with the German Pharmaceutical Society, it edits the oldest German chemical journal, "Archives of Pharmacy" (Archivs der Pharmazie).

The division informs about the field of Medicinal Chemistry in press releases, contributions to the journal "News from Chemistry" (Nachrichten aus der Chemie) and on its internet page.
