1867 On initiative of Adolf von Baeyer and other prominent German chemists foundation of the "Deutsche Chemische Gesellschaft zu Berlin" (DChG) on November 11. August Wilhelm von Hofmann becomes first president
1868 Publication of the scientific journal "Berichte der Deutschen Chemischen Gesellschaft"
1877 Foundation of the "Verein Analytischer Chemiker" as representation of chemists in industry
1887 Transformation of the "Verein Analytischer Chemiker" in "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Angewandte Chemie". Its membership journal is the "Angewandte Chemie"
1892 25th anniversary of the "Deutsche Chemische Gesellschaft" is celebrated at the Berlin townhall on November 12.
1896 The "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Angewandte Chemie" is renamed in "Verein Deutscher Chemiker" (VDCh)
1900 Career service for chemists established at VDCh. Inauguration of the "Hofmann House" in Berlin which becomes seat of the DChG. Regional section of the VDCh in New York.
1903

Establishment of the "Chemiker Hilfskasse" as a benevolent fund. First award of the August-Wilhelm-von-Hofmann-Denkmünze (to Henri Moissan) and of the Liebig-Denkmünze (to Adolf von Baeyer).

1911 First award of the Adolf-von-Baeyer-Denkmünze (to Paul Friedländer).
1912 First award of the Emil-Fischer-Medaille (to Fritz Hofmann). The VDCh is the world's largest chemical society.
1918 50th anniversary of DChG and 100th birthday of August von Hofmann.
1921 VDCh, DChG and the Verein zur Wahrung der Interessen der chemischen Industrie Deutschlands (predecessor organization of VCI) establish the Verlag Chemie GmbH as publishing house.
1936 New statutes of the VDCh with Nazi contents. The new statutes of the DChG avoid such contents.
1938 Integration into the NS-umbrella organization Nationalsozialistischer Bund Deutscher Technik.
1944 The DChG offices in the Hofmannhaus and the VDCh offices are destroyed in air raids. The VDCh office is transferred to Grünberg/Hessen.
1946 Foundation of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker in the British Sector on September 20 in Göttingen. Chairman is Karl Ziegler (until 1949). Dr. Rudolf Wolf first secretary general, office is located in Grünberg.
1947 Foundation of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker in Hesse on January 22. Chairman is Hans Popp (until 1949), secretary general is also Rudolf Wolf.
1949 Integration of the two regional Societies to form the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker in Frankfurt am Main on September 20. First president is Karl Ziegler (until December 31, 1951).
1950 The GDCh has 30 regional sections. After a 10 years interruption the Liebig-Denkmünze (to E. Konrad) and the Emil-Fischer-Medaille (to H. Meerwein) are awarded again. First award of the Alfred-Stock-Gedächtnispreis (to Egon Wiberg).
1953 Foundation of the Chemische Gesellschaft in the German Democratic Republic. The GDCh membership journal is founded as Nachrichten aus Chemie und Technik and appears as Supplement of Angewandte Chemie.
1955 First award of the Otto-Hahn-Preis für Chemie und Physik (to Lise Meitner).
1956 The GDCh office moves from Grünberg to Frankfurt.
1958 More than 10.000 members.
1959 GDCh organizes the 17th IUPAC-Congress in Munich.
1962 GDCh office moves to its current location in the Carl-Bosch-Haus, Varrentrappstr. 40-42, Frankfurt. First issue of the International Edition in English of the Angewandte Chemie.
1966 More than 15.000 members.
1967 100th anniversary celebration of the foundation of the Deutsche Chemische Gesellschaft in Berlin.
1970 Foundation of the Federation of the European Chemical Societies (FECS).
1972 Retirement of Dr. Wolf. Dr. Wolfgang Fritsche new secretary general of the GDCh.
1975 First award of the Karl-Ziegler-Preis (to Georg Wittig).
1976 Fritsche becomes secretary general of FECS (until 1988).
1982 The Advisory Committee on Existing Chemicals (BUA) is founded at the GDCh.
1983 GDCh organizes the 29th IUPAC-Congress in Cologne.
1987 More than 20.000 members.
1989 Fritsche becomes president of FECS (until 1992).
1991 Dissolution of the Chemische Gesellschaft. To a large extent their members become members of the GDCh. Prof. Dr. Heindirk tom Dieck succeeds Dr. Wolfgang Fritsche as GDCh secretary general. GDCh has now more than 25,000 members.
1992 125th anniversary of the Deutsche Chemische Gesellschaft in Berlin.
1994 Code of Conduct for GDCh members established.
1996 GDCh buys the remaining shares of the Carl-Bosch-Haus from the Max-Planck Society. Major share of VCH Publishers sold to investment group. Development of the "Würzburger Modell" to modernize chemistry studies in Germany.
1997 26. General Meeting together with the Gesellschaft Österreichischer Chemiker on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the GÖCH.
1998 Merger of several national chemical journals (including Liebigs Annalen and Chemische Berichte) to create the European Journal of Organic Chemistry and the European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry.
1999 50th anniversary of the GDCh. 27th General GDCh Meeting and 37th IUPAC-Congress in Berlin.
2002 Together with chemical societies from France and Spain creation of the new journal "Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry", published by Springer Verlag. Prof. Dr. Wolfram Koch succeeds Prof. Heindirk tom Dieck as GDCh Executive Director.
2003 Organization of the "Jahr der Chemie" (Year of Chemistry) together with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), Science in Dialog (WiD) and seven other chemistry organizations.
2004 Organization of the 36th International Chemistry Olympiad in Kiel together with BMBF, VCI and IPN.
2005 Launch of ChemMedChem, a new journal initiated by the Societiá Chimica Italiana and the GDCh, published by Wiley-VCH. GDCh Biennial Congress in Düsseldorf. Mott Chemie schafft Strukturen (Chemistry creates Structures). GDCh Board decides Richard Kuhn Medal no longer to be awarded.
2006 EuCheMS organizes 1. European Chemistry Congress in Budapest, supported mainly by GDCh and RSC.
2007

C6 meeting in Paris, July 2007, Paris declaration passed, GDCh Science Forum, September 16 - 19 at Ulm (former biennial congress) GDCh hosts together with Dechema and DBG the EuCheMS General Assembly 2007 at Frankfurt in October.

2008

Foundation of the new journal ChemSuSChem which has been designed and edited with the Sociéta Chemica Italiana and by Wiley-VCH.

2009
