Active Support Right from the Beginning
Science education at the schools has a high priority in the array of tasks of the GDCh. Knowledge and skill in mathematics and the natural sciences has to be an indispensable part of general education. With this aim, the GDCh actively promotes concepts and curricula for school lessons and develops general plans for the education and continuing education in the sciences. To be especially cited here are the acitvities of the Division of Chemical Education. The GDCh promotes the study as well as the students of chemistry at the universities. It also supports university reforms and the introduction of gradational university majors in chemistry. To provide an overview about the study situation in chemistry, the GDCh records precise data in Germany on a yearly basis: this includes the number of students, length of study and examinations as well as the first occupational positions of the graduates. For those high school students interested in chemistry, there is the brochure "Chemie studieren" (German only) which explains the possibilities in choosing a major, specializations and career chances. The student who decides to study chemistry can find the curricula of the variuos majors offered at universities and universities of applied science in the "Chemistry Study Guide". Those interested may also find diverse information on the website
www.chemie-im-fokus.de (German and English version).
The competence of the GDCh in questions related to university study and education is recognized and taken into consideration by the responsible politicians.
